Under 21 U.S.C. § 841 it is a crime for any person to knowingly or intentionally manufacture, distribute or possess a controlled substance (includes marijuana).
There are typically 3 ranges of punishment depending on the drug and the quantity of the substance.
1) Mandatory minimum of 10 years to life;
2) Mandatory minimum of 5 years to 40 years;
3) 0 to 20 years (rarely charged).
