MAIL FRAUD CRIMES

Mail fraud occurs when there is an intentionally deceptive scheme or plan that occurs in connection with the use of the U.S. mail or any private commercial carrier such as FedEx.  More.  

The punishment is up to 20 years, unless a financial institution is involved, then the punishment is up to 30 years in federal prison.  It is important to note that the punishment is per mailing.  For example, if 6 letters are mailed and 3 FedEx packages sent, the potential punishment is multiplied by 9.
